SPLACH - Martin Le Chevallier "Répertoire des subversions - Art, activisme, méthodes"

Smoking out a royal wedding, dancing on a nuclear silo, turning a bus shelter into a theatre… Martin Le Chevallier’s Répertoire des subversion – Art, activisme, méthodes (Directory of subversions - Art, activism, methods) catalogues a thousand-and-one tactics invented by artists, activists, resistance fighters, dissidents, and other free spirits to thwart the violence of domination, or the dreariness of convention, by devising new forms of nonviolent action. Structured like an alphabet primer, it establishes a typology of those creative methods of insubordination: diverting, infiltrating, interfering, sabotaging, poaching, tinkering, etc. It assembles a multitude of examples from all of history throughout the world, reproduced in the form of micro-stories. From strikes in ancient Egypt to Black Lives Matter, by way of Suffragettes, hippies, LGBT struggles and the Arab Spring: the most diverse mobilisations intersect with artist gestures that burst into public space with insolence, humour, or poetry.

At once a toolbox, a reference book and a mischievous ramble, this catalogue pays tribute to those who would rather act than suffer. And it encourages us to do the same.

Cultural action room.
For everyone.

Martin Le Chevallier: Born in May 68, visual artist, filmmaker, teacher at Rennes 2 University, and curator. Based on humour and derision, his works deliberately interfere in public space, whether this be urban, economic or political. He got himself audited by a consulting firm, travelled to Brussels in a procession to present a miraculous European flag there, set up a tourist telescope on top of a supermarket, and for the past few years, he has been submitting project proposals with the intention of getting rejected. All of these acts could appear in the Répertoire des subversion – Art, activisme, méthodes (Directory of subversions - Art, activism, methods), his recently published catalogue of action methods.

Event organised as part of SPLACH, Séminaire Pour l’Art et les CHoses imprimées, in partnership with the École des Beaux-Arts de Sète, the bookshop Librairie L’Échappée Belle and the Studio Trames.
