"Voir ou apercevoir", work by Mélanie Joseph, performance by Manon Cappato

Performance

Voir ou apercevoir (Seeing or Noticing) is a series of videos linked to artist Mélanie Joseph’s research-creation thesis treating of on-screen representations of Deaf people and their social invisibilisation.

Exploring and using the archives of the Institut National Audiovisuel, she attempts to highlight the oppression and repression mechanisms that affect Deaf people in the television realm.

On that medium, how are Deaf people, their words and their bodies considered? Do others speak for them? What is said about them, and what words are used to designate them?

Does sign language have its place? Mélanie Joseph chooses to reverse the relationship with French Sign Language and its interpretation, favouring performed activation of her videos instead of subtitling.

« “Having no space in which to speak is a form of violence. Forcing Deaf children to conform to hearing norms at all costs is a form of violence. In the archives, one notices that the Deaf subject has no presence, instead playing the role of subordinate.” Mélanie Joseph
